Here are some natural ways to get your energy up
Set aside your caffeine and read on.
We will keep it short and sweet today.
How many of these quick six are you doing?
- Stay hydrated. During cold weather, try flavouring your warm water with lemon slices, ginger root slices or any other flavour-full vegetable you have around. During hot weather, add freshly cut lime to a glass of cool water, and enjoy!
- Eat protein for breakfast. What are some ideas here? Beans with ugali. Peanut butter on chapati. Roasted groundnuts with uji. Chicken soup with brown buns. Leftover spaghetti with meatballs, and so on. Protein early in the morning will melt away your mid-morning cravings.
- Move around more. A quick intense 15 minute workout will lift up your feel-good hormones (endorphins) and give you a burst of smiley dopamine, serotonin and oxytocin. This is the very busy quartet that works round the clock to keep you feeling great. Go on, get off your chair and do something.
- If you can, avoid added sugar. We tend to binge on oily salty or oily sugary foods when the weather gets cold, or when we feel we need some emotional sun in our lives. Your taste buds regenerate after every 10 to 14 days. So give it some time – about two weeks – and the less sugary food will be more palatable by then. Until then, avoid added sugar in the morning.
- Be social. When was the last time you had a real good laugh with a face-to-face friend? We are so “socially connected” via various social media apps that we are struggling to “truly connect” in person. People with strong, genuine social networks are known to have strong mental health. Schedule a catch-up date, today.
- Quit smoking. We left this for the last. And yes, it is difficult to do. This is, however, the one destroyer of the body’s self-rejuvenating system, that is, the lungs. Smoking while expecting higher energy, is active self-sabotage. It may be time to give oxygen a chance. What do you think?
