“Opportunities don’t happen, you create them.” Chris Gosser
Failure hurts.
And when you don’t get the outcome you’re looking for in the interviewing room, it can hurt your ego, your reputation and – even worse – your professional and financial future.
Here are some three common interviewing missteps –
Do any of these sound familiar?
Failing to thoroughly prepare to interact with the interviewing panel. An interview is NOT an exam. So do NOT treat it as such. The tendency of answering questions asked, as though you were filling out answers in a major examination – this has to end, my friend. What’s the alternative? Learn about the framework that has reduced anxiety and improved performance for several of our Clients.
Focusing on performance metrics and diminishing your personality. You were shortlisted because your technical competencies have already been approved. What else do you bring to the table? What kind of leader are you? Where has your impact been seen? Yes, you can! You can demonstrate personality and performance in the interviewing room. Wood, you are not.
Letting emotions get in the way. Strong emotions and cognitive biases keep you from presenting yourself well. A word or a look from an interviewer can throw you off your tracks. Or remind you of a past event, a terrible colleague and previous workplace failures – distracting you from being your best. You may get defensive, loud or – even worse – totally freeze. There is a better way. Stop being played like a guitar.
Learn how to avoid these mistakes and strengthen your interviewing acumen.
Acquire a framework for interviewing that prepares you to articulate your leadership impact and influence, demonstrate your managerial and operational excellence, while presenting yourself as a real human being – not a robotic superhuman.
